The new FoEM Clerkship course is a flipped classroom course developed for medical student learners that provides an introduction to emergency medicine with an emphasis on the EM mindset. The course focuses on can’t miss diagnoses for the most commonly encountered chief complaints seen in the ED. Time will be spent clarifying the critical differential diagnosis, building a framework for determination of “sick” versus “stable,” and the initial ED workup for common ED chief complaints. Text-based and multimedia paired asynchronous resources curated at the level of the medical student learner allow topic review before or after learning sessions. Classroom meeting time will be preserved for active, small group, case-based learning. Essential Learning handouts for each chief complaint are provided, which dive deeper into each of the major diagnoses within the differential. You should use these for self-study, spaced repetition, and shelf preparation.
The Clerkship course is designed to be implemented by your program’s clerkship leadership using small group case-based active learning. Learners may also independently review vetted asynchronous study resources and Essential Learning summaries created by FoEM.
