Foundations of Emergency Medicine’s core content Foundations I (F1) and Foundations II (F2) courses provide a ripe opportunity for a structured Resident as Teacher (RaT) Experience for senior residents.
FoEM Resident as Teacher Experience
- Key Goals
- Challenging senior residents to understand core and critical content on an advanced level (teaching/explaining)
- Incorporating a formal Resident as Teacher experience that includes mentored small group teaching, coaching, and feedback from Faculty Teaching Coaches
- Anticipated Workload for the Resident Educator
- Advanced preparation (1-2 hr) prior to Foundations Case teaching (# required determined by program)
- Resident Educators may voluntarily create coordinated Teaching Slides using a provided template and submit for potential national publication on the FoEM website.
- Anticipated Benefits to Resident :
- Valuable and engaging way to spend conference time with higher order learning and advanced skill development (giving feedback, remediation of learners, etc. ) that will benefit them wherever they ultimately work (teaching formal learners or overseeing APPs at community sites).
- Way to bolster CVs as they apply for/interview for jobs (FoEM Educator role within leadership, teaching/presentations for each case in teaching role).
- May inform preference for community vs academics.
- Anticipated Workload for the Faculty Teaching Coach
- Advanced preparation (2-3 hr) per meeting, inclusive of supporting preparation, overseeing classroom meetings, and providing feedback to Resident Educators.
- Teaching Coaches may serve as an editor for coordinated Teaching Slides using a provided template and submit for potential national publication on the FoEM website.
- Anticipated Benefits to the Program :
- Empower senior residents and challenge them with a longitudinal teaching experience.
- Reduce the reliance on faculty for small group teaching.
- Strengthen relationships between resident classes.
