The new FoEM Urgent Care (UC) course is a fundamental knowledge curriculum targeting EM Residents, Medical Students and Advanced Practice Providers. The UC course focuses on common, low acuity presentations within the EM Model. This course includes a series of brief oral boards style cases with focused discussion on identifying hidden higher acuity illness, best practice management and patient education priorities. Text-based and multimedia paired asynchronous resources allow optional in-depth topic review before or after learning sessions. Essential Learning handouts for each topic may be used for self-study and spaced repetition.
Ideally, the UC course should be implemented by your local program leadership to include small group case-based active learning (available in the Leadership menu). However, learners may independently review unit objectives, vetted asynchronous study resources and “Essential Learning” summaries created by FoEM.
Objectives for All Topics:
- List a differential for emergent, urgent and benign causes
- Discuss which history and exam findings are most helpful to establish a diagnosis
- Discuss which tests, if any, are needed during the work up
- Discuss appropriate treatment options
- Determine which patients require transfer to a higher level of care
- Anticipate and practice structured responses for common patient questions
- Discuss appropriate return precautions and discharge instructions
